Wheelock Graves Veazey papers, 1853-1939 (bulk 1853-1894).

Series I, personal papers, consists mainly of letters written by Veazey to his wife during his service in the Civil War. Many of the letters have been transcribed. Other documents include: Veazey's orations; his accounts of the Battle of Gettysburg; correspondence with Civil War historian G.G. Benedict; and part of an interview concerning Veazey's political ambitions. Series II, official correspondence and legal papers, is principally made up of correspondence to Veazey in his capacity as an attorney. The bulk of this correspondence dates from the period 1874-1878 and includes correspondence concerning the Phair murder case in 1874. Correspondents include G.G. Benedict, J.S. Morrill, E.J. Ormsbee, E.J. Phelps, William M. Pingry, Luke P. Poland, Redfield Proctor, Stephen Thomas and Peter T. Washburn. Also, there is a sizable portion of documents dating from the the Civil War, mainly consisting of official communications between Veazey and government officials, recruits and other officers. Of particular interest are Veazey's pocket diaries from 1861 and 1863.

Wheelock Graves Veazey was born in Brentwood, New Hampshire, on December 5, 1835. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1859and went on to study at the Law School at Albany, New York.
